One of the greatest uses of Video Gait Analysis is to show you, the patient, what we are seeing and be able to play back footage and explain what is happening biomechanically to your body.  Patients are often surprised to see how they run.

Usually video gait analysis is operated by our Physiotherapist or Podiatrist, but often Leah and Luke work together on patients with more complex or multiple joint/muscle problems.

In the case above, it was difficult for the patient to visualise what we were describing.  Showing images on the Pressure Plate Scanner was not sufficient to convince the patient of what we were seeing because RS Scan is difficult to interpret without knowldege of foot function plus the important data is presented in graph form.  A picture however, speaks a thousand words

In the case above we took 8 separate videos:

  1. No shoes walking
  2. No shoes running
  3. Running shoes walking
  4. Running shoes running
  5. Running shoes walking with pre-existing orthoses
  6. Running shoes running with pre-existing orthoses
  7. Walking with new orthoses
  8. Running with new orthoses

We were able to demonstrate how our new orthoses improved his gait when compared to no shoes, shoes alone and his previous orthoses.

One of the beauties of this system is that during the session we can adjust and modify orthoses and then capture the effects there and then - we can therefore demonstrate to our patient the improvements.

What video gait analysis software can do:

  • Create slow motion images
  • Create multiple comparison Screens
  • Measure joint angles to aid acurate prescription
  • Overlay images to do 'before and after' screens
  • Produce video files for patients to 'take-away'

Our practitioners use Video Gait Analysis are skilled in understanding why abnormal movements are occur.

For example, abnormal foot pronation (in-rolling) may be originating from (to name a few)  the back, pelvis, foot, torsion in the long bones, long bone angulation to the ground, muscular imbalance or weakness.

The video gait analysis in combination with clinical examination enables us to confirm what we find in the examination room and allows us to make informed judgements on corrective measures such as orthoses, exercise programmes and running shoes.

You will never receive video gait analysis alone, it forms part of a fuller examination that includes:

  • A detailed medical history
  • A detailed history of excercise, hobbies and occupational factors
  • A thorough biomechanical clinical examination
  • Footwear appraisal
  • Pressure plate analysis

Orthoses are usually only dispensed as part of a treatment programme that may involve physical therapy and a tailored exercise programme.  Prescription orthoses are only dispensed after a trial period with a temporary insole to test functionality and to see how the recipient adapts to the treatment modality.  This allows us to make changes to prescription if needed.
