What is a dietitian?

A recent study found that over 90% of people are interested in seeing a dietitian but what do they do?

Registered dietitians translate the science of nutrition into everyday information about food.

They undertake the practical application of nutrition with both individuals and population groups to promote the well being of individuals and communities to prevent nutrition related problems.

They are also involved in the diagnoses and dietary treatment of disease.

Dietitians work with people who have special dietary needs, inform the general public about nutrition, give unbiased advice, evaluate and improve treatments and educate clients, doctors, nurses, health professionals and community groups.fruit weights

Of course they work with the overweight patient but also can also assist those who are looking to gain weight, increase muscle mass, increase energy or prevent chronic disease such as diabetes.

Dietitians are part detective (looking for clues in your eating and exercise habits that could be contributing to the problem) and part counsellor (using their extensive nutritional sciences background to help you find the best way to reach your goals).

During the first session, an RD will obtain your medical history, as well as a detailed diet and exercise history.

This session generally focuses on getting a great deal of background information and discussing your short-term and long-term goals.

During follow-up sessions, your RD will discuss potential barriers to reaching your goals and provide nutrition education.

Dietitians can create customized meals plans and recommend specific calorie levels, nutrient goals, or exercise prescriptions.

Typically an intial session will be one hour long with a follow up 4-6 weeks later to track progress.  Occasionally patients will re-book for "top-up" sessions.

Gary is registered and regulated by the HPC.
