Repetitive Strain Injury

Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) is a common complaint in workers and has been shown to affect up to 500,000 people each year, contact betterNow! tosee how our Cambridge based Physiotherapist can help  

 

RSI is a general term and covers a wide range of injuries to tendons/muscles and even nerves.

 

Usually people perceive that RSI only affects the upper limb however this is not entirely true as where the injury occurs depends to a large extent on the Job you do or the sport you enjoy.

 

Some different types of RSI

 

  1. Tendonitis (inflammation of a tendon)
  2. Tenosynovitis (inflammation of the sheath surrounding a tendon).
  3. Carpel tunnel syndrome causing nerve irritation at the wrist.
  4. Epicondylitis- for example ‘tennis elbow’ or ‘golfers elbow’
  5. Bursitis (these are fluid filled sacks that help reduce friction between bodily structures such as bones or muscles, which can become inflamed with repetitive overuse) ‘Housemaids knee’ is one example of this.

 

 

What Causes RSI?

 

Repetitive actions such as twisting movements, hammering, squeezing, pounding, pushing, pulling, lifting or reaching.

 

Made worse with excess weight/workloads/lack of variation of movement/overuse and even stress.

 

Here is an insight into types or repetitive strain injury such as tennis elbow, golfers elbow, tendonitis, bursitis. a look into who is likely to get the condition as well as symptoms such as pain, swelling, numbness, loss of strength and joint restrictions.

 

Who is likely to get RSI?

 

  • Clerical workers/admin staff.
  • Anyone involved in data processing.
  • Drivers
  • Athletes- Golf/tennis players/darts players/cyclists/runners and many more.
  • Machine operators/builders- especially those involving vibration.
  • Carpenters
  • Cooks
  • Cleaners

 

Possible Symptoms?

 

Symptoms vary from case to case however here are some examples:

 

  • Pain and tenderness in the affected area
  • Swelling,
  • Heaviness in the arms and wrists
  • Numbness
  • A tingling sensation in the fingertips
  • Joint restrictions
  • Loss of strength and grip in the hand.

 

Physiotherapy can help to ease pain levels and increase function by using techniques such as soft tissue mobilisation and joint mobilisation as well as ultrasound and other electrotherapy modalities. We can also offer ample advice regarding the condition itself and ways of avoiding aggravation in order to speed up the healing process and get you back to your normal self.

 

It is important to get RSI type injuries addressed early on to stop the condition progressing and causing you more discomfort and increased disability.
