Therapeutic Ultrasound

Therapeutic Ultrasound

BetterNow's Cambridge Physiotherapy service uses Therapeutic Ultrasound for the treatment of a range of musculoskeletal conditions.

Ultrasound has been a widely used and accepted treatment modality since the 1950's

According to a survey of orthopaedic certified specialists, some of the most common uses for ultrasound were as follows:

  • Reduce soft tissue inflammation and swelling.ultrasound
  • Increase soft tissue extensibility (stretchiness)
  • Increase healing of soft tissues.
  • Decrease pain

How it works

So… Ultrasound as it suggests from the name uses sound waves at different frequencies (depending on the desired effect) which travel through the skin and into the soft tissues beneath (muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia, fat etc.). Sound waves will either be absorbed or scattered as they reach the tissues below.

So why does sending Therapeutic Ultrasound sound waves into these tissues help?

Via 2 main pathways, THERMAL and NON THERMAL.

Thermal/heating effect- applies to structures with greater protein content such as muscles, ligaments, tendons and capsules because they can easily absorb the sound waves. This absorption causes heat to generate in that tissue. Raising the temperature may have a range of benefits such as:

  •       Improved circulation

  •       Reduced scar formation when soft tissue is healing

  •       Decrease muscle spasm and pain

NON- Thermal effect-  So, when the tissue is low in protein but high in water content it will not easily absorb the sound waves (such as fat). This leads to the sound waves splitting/scattering. This process stimulates movement around the cells and promotes/ improves healing.

Here are some of the positive effects:

  •       Reduces inflammation/swelling

  •       Encourages tissue rebuilding

  •       Decreases pain and muscle spasm.

So essentially, coupled with other Physiotherapy treatments such as massage, spinal mobilisation/manipulation and exercise prescription, ultrasound is very useful in treating a wide range of injuries and disorders.
